If Tom Delonge had stuck to playing the trumpet or his initial dream of becoming a fire fighter, music history might have not known the catchy punk adolescent anthems of Blink-182. Originally named Duck Tape, thankfully, they renamed themselves Blink (eventually adding the -182 when an Irish pop band of the same name threatened legal action). They quietly gained success while touring throughout Southern California in the early 90′s.

Growing up in Poway, CA, a suburb of San Diego, young Thomas Matthew Delonge Jr. wasn’t what you’d call a scholar. He was more of the Jeff Spicoli type who lived skateboarding and music. Getting expelled in his junior year for showing up drunk at a basketball game was like fate steering him towards his future, sort of. He transferred to Rancho Bernardo High where he became friends with Anne Hoppus, the sister of his future bass player. With drummer Scott Raynor (whom they fired in ’98 for being too much of a rockstar, i.e., too much drinking), they embarked on a steady ascent to music fame and fortune, releasing their kick ass breakthrough album “Enema of the State” in 1999. Poppy, punkish, immature yet with startling insight on adolescent frustration and relationships, hit singles such as “What’s My Age Again”, “All the Small Things”, and “Adam’s Song” catapulted the band into Top 40 status before the band went on indefinite hiatus in 2005.

Side Projects:
When you’re famous, you get to have things named after you or you start a clothing line or open a restaurant. DeLonge has tackled 2 out of the 3 (not bad, although it’s still too early to say if a restaurant is completely out of the question).

DeLonge got his first guitar for his birthday from a friend who found it in the garbage, or so legend says. Luckily, he moved on to Fender Stratocasters (with a DiMarzio X2Ns in the bridge position). Naturally, Fender teamed with him to create the Tom DeLonge Signature Stratocaster, which still enjoys cult status among those who love its simplicity (see our October 30 blog entry for more details).

In 2003, with his Fender contract expiring, DeLonge switched to Gibson and got his name on another guitar. Their collaboration yielded the Tom DeLonge Signature ES-333, based on a standard Gibson ES-335, a classic semi-hollow body design that he had been playing.

Another customized Gibson ES-333 in 2013. Photo courtesy of thevine.com

The ES-333 has an added overwound ‘Dirty Fingers’ humbucker pickup and thinner satin finish, which in theory, uses the players’ natural body oils to polish down to a naturally “aged” look over time.

Its thick, distorted tone is the Delonge’s signature guitar tone and widely recognized as the quintessential Blink sound. Unless you’re DeLonge, who customized quite a few of his personal Gibsons with stickers, racing stripes, paint, burns and scratches, the average Joe gets to chose between a Brown or Cream body, with a Natural neck and headstock–which translates to unpretentious low-key or a blank canvas for the uber creative, depending on how you choose to rock it.

Another paint splattered version of the ES-333. This one was painted with a lemon creme base.

There is a lower cost Epiphone version of the Tom DeLonge ES-333. Manufactured in China, it is fitted with the same Dirty Fingers humbucker but is more affordable than the Gibson version that goes for about a grand. These Epiphones are the ones you’re more likely to see floating around and they’re actually decent guitars. DeLonge plays these in concert occasionally, and he’s been known to give them away to fans afterward.

You can almost see the Macbeth guitar strap he pairs with his ES-333.

Other projects:
DeLonge also co-founded the Macbeth Shoe Company with fellow band mate Mark Hoppus (who has since sold his shares to DeLonge). The brand hawks a fairly decent selection of men’s shoes (kudos for featuring a vegan line), tees and accessories designed by famous musicians for the not so famous.

Reunion:
Blink-182 has outlived the life cycle of many bands before them–they’ve broken up, started side projects (DeLonge’s were Box Car Racer and Angels & Airwaves) and come back together (some would say as a watered down version of what they used to be).

This brown version, minus the awesome scratches and band logo, is what the average Joe gets.

Blink’s reunion in 2009 led to a reunion tour. In 2011,the band’s 6th album, Neighborhoods, was released, topping out at #2 on the Billboard 200. Many say the sound is more subdued and reflects the band members’ maturity and life experiences. Perhaps there’s just something missing–like the spontaneity and youthful ignorance of a kid who didn’t know any better.

Peep Toe Shoes Biography

Source(google.com.pk)
I'm often asked if there's a difference between peep-toed shoes and open-toed shoes.

Well, the answer is yes. Although, technically, peep-toe shoes are open-toed shoes, there is a difference between the two styles -- and open-toed shoes are not really peep-toes.

The difference lies in how much of the toe line is exposed. A peep toe shoe exposes only part of the toes (as seen in the top picture), while open toe shoes expose the entire line of toes (as illustrated in the bottom image).

open_toe_shoes.jpgBut if you haven't been making that distinction, don't feel bad -- most people don't. I've even seen a lot of shoe retailers mixing the two labels recently.

And let's face it, when the shoes are this hot, it doesn't really matter what you call them.
As a new summer associate, you must have heard many a horror story about your predecessors, including tales of fashion disasters. For example, do you remember the boozy Milbank SA who supposedly showed up to events wearing an Olympic jumpsuit? How about the girl who wanted to march around her firm with a $9,000 Birkin bag? As this year’s summers descend upon Biglaw firms across the country, we thought that we might be able to offer you some assistance to prevent you from committing comparable crimes of fashion.

To accomplish this feat, we’ve teamed up with none other than Anna Akbari, the “thinking person’s stylist,” to help you make it through the summer. You don’t want to wind up as a bullet point on Weil Gotshal’s “unacceptable” list….

In case you’re not familiar with Anna Akbari, she’s a professor at New York University and the founder of Closet Catharsis, a fashion and image consulting company that takes a holistic approach to individual empowerment and identity construction through personal styling and image management. (You can see her full bio at the end of this post.) This woman knows a thing or two about fashion.

When we spoke with Professor Akbari, the conversation was a little heavy on women’s fashion — sorry guys, but ladies just have a lot more to deal with when it comes to dressing for work in a professional setting. While most men are able to slip into a suit and head out into the world looking dapper as can be, women have to worry about their hair, their makeup, their Spanx, their heel height, their bra, their accessories, and most importantly, the social mores of their office. After all, as we know from the allegations in some recent sex discrimination cases, it’s a mad, mad, Mad Men’s world out there.

Launched in 2012, Lover.ly aims to make the dog-eared folder of magazine clippings a thing of the past for brides-to-be. The digital wedding channel, which makes the planning process a more simpler one, is bringing everything from charming real weddings to expert advice on all things bridal right to R29.

This traditional Southern wedding included a custom whiskey and martini bar, gorgeous peonies, rustic farm tables, and a classic Georgia backdrop. The couple also incorporated little details like monograms, hand-painted watercolors, and hand-written chalkboards signs. Sounds like it's straight out of Pinterest!
I get a kick out of women's shoes--the protrusions and spikes, the high fashion toes like ship's prows and the platforms like personal podiums. Bergstein's debut book on how shoes define women offers the reader a celebrity-infused history of our relationship to footwear. The diversity of shoes reflects something more than function and personal style; our choices are inextricably laced with desire and identified with social currency.

Bergstein begins with Farragamo's humble beginnings in a small I...more

The title and premise of this book are a little misleading. Or maybe my expectations were a little off. This was really a mini-history of shoes from the 20th century, beginning with the arrival of Salvatore Ferragamo on the scene and in America. Bergstein chooses to tell this story mainly through the tales of some iconic shoes: Dorothy's "ruby" slippers, stilettos (of course), Birkenstocks, Chuck Taylor's, etc.

While I did learn a few things (Ferragamo's history was really interesting), this fel...more

Bergstein frames the social and popular culture history of women in the 20th century through iconic shoes--Ferragamo, Hollywood and the first mass marketed luxury brand (disclaimer--I buy Ferragamo 8.5AAAA), the ruby slippers and the Depression, wartime rationing and cork wedges, Dior and the New Look's stilettos of conspicuous consumption, Audrey Hepburn's beatnik ballet flats, hippies and Birkenstocks, disco and platform shoes, Jane Fonda's aerobic Reeboks, grunge and Doc Martens and Carrie's...more

Only got as far as page 98. The book starts with the history of Ferragamo and I was interested in his story. I liked the tidbits of shoes in the movies and how they played an influential part in what women wore as well as setting the tone for a scene and the personality of a character. Sounds like a good book, huh? I just couldn't get past the authors opinion of women in the past being miserable and suppressed by their husbands. I admit that there was lots of that going on, but not all women wer...more

I was really excited to have won this book from the giveaways section on goodreads because I love to read non-fiction books on random topics. This book is all about shoes, and though every girl knows some shoe basics, I never knew so many interesting stories about shoes existed. Each chapter focused on a different time period and on a different types of shoes. Usually, the chapter included a lot of pop culture too, which I will adm...more

I had read a review of this book, and was intrigued, so I borrowed a copy from the library. I should qualify this by saying that a) I am fascinated with the history of clothing, and b) one of the ways in which I am a stereotypical woman is that I love shoes.

This is a very readable social history of women's shoes, and I found it to be really interesting. For instance, I didn't know that until the mid-nineteenth century, only well-to-do people had shoes that we made for one foot or the other. I al...more

"Women from the Ankle Down" is a history of shoes with a focus on the 20th century. While it's mostly about women's shoes, there's some about men's footwear as well. I'm not a shoe person by any means (jewelry and purses are my personal poison) but I think the off-the-beaten-path history is always really fun to read about.

This book isn't purely just a history of shoes. It's an engaging book full of anecdotes and pop culture. I thought it was really cool how Bergstein was able to show how shoes c...more

This history of (mainly) women’s shoes pretty much starts in 1900, the point in history when women’s skirts became short enough to show their shoes, and when the making of shoes changed from a craftsman’s job of creating one pair at a time to factories that made hundreds of pairs in a day. This lowered the price of shoes to the point where the average person could afford more than one pair of shoes, and shoe obsessions could begin.

The author intersperses biographies of famous shoemakers- Ferrag...more

One thing I was reminded of while reading this book: I really need a new pair of classic black pumps.

First of all, Women from the Ankle Down: The Story of Shoes and How They Define Us by Rachelle Bergstein is really a book about women’s shoes. There are mentions of men’s shoes, but not many — let’s face it, men’s shoes are boring. Most of this book is about women’s shoes and how they evolved and what influenced them.

When I saw there was a book about women and their shoes, I knew I wanted to read it. This book is about much more than that, though, telling the history of twentieth century western culture through footwear.

Those of us who never had to live through war rationing don't usually give a lot of thought to supply and demand, but this book highlights how such things can dictate fashion when it tells the story of Salvatore Ferragamo and his invention of the wedgie. Hovering between 3.5 and 4 stars on this one..no especially groundbreaking or brand new information here, but a light, fun romp through the cultural history of shoes, that explores the relationship between women and their footwear. Made me wonder why I walked past the Bata Shoe Museum every day on my way to grad school and didn't ever go in! Inspired me to make a visit to Toronto for that very purpose in the near future. Dutch shoe brand United Nude and fashion designer Iris van Herpen have collaborated to create crescent-shaped boots for her latest ready to wear collection shown at Paris Fashion Week.

For Van Herpen's Autumn Winter 2014 collection titled Biopiracy, the designer and United Nude worked together on two footwear designs.

The futuristic boots curve up and around the leg, encompassing the lower leg on both sides and looping behind the knee.

A long seam runs up the front of the upper before it opens at the top, while the back of the calf is left exposed.

Seven-inch-high heels cantilever from the back of the solid base, which continues the shape of the upper to the ground.

A peep-toe boot was also created in a similar style, but with a strap that wraps around the leg at ankle height instead of at the knee.

This is the ninth time United Nude and Van Herpen have worked together on footwear for her shows. "Working with Iris Van Herpen is each time a big challenge for us as she pushes boundaries with ideas for things that have never been done before," said United Nude founder Rem D Koolhaas.

United Nude make shoes with Iris Van Herpen for her Biopiracy collection

United Nude collaborates with Iris Van Herpen for shoes completing her collection for its 9th consecutive time. Nevertheless this is the first time that two instead of just one design graced the runway, in the form of the Biopiracy Boot and the Biopiracy peeptoe ankle Bootie, both on staggering 7 inch tall platform cantilevered heels.

The Biopiracy collection by Iris Van Herpen emerged from astonishment of companies’ patented human genes. As part of the show, Lawrence Malstaf created art installations, which developed the impression of models being weightless and breathless. In their half-sleep they seem bio-hacked, to slow down time and energy. Iris van Herpen and Lawrence Malstaf experiment with living objects, kinetic architecture and physical interaction through fashion in installation art.

A 3D printing collaboration with Julia Koerner and Materialise fuses the artisanal with the technical to create a kinetic dress which dances as it amplifies bodily movement. The Iris Van Herpen × United Nude Boot overrules the natural shape of the foot; this makes the graphically leather moulded boots futuristic sculptures extending the legs with a new silhouette into motion. Iris Van Herpen and United Nude is a match made in heaven from day one, as they are both not afraid of breaking boundaries by experimentation with design and technology.

Shoe stretcher Biography

Source(google.com.pk)
Shoe stretchers ease the pain and discomforts associated with wearing shoes and boots. These devices have stretchable with steel-threaded rods that can be inserted into the shoe to get the leather expanded to the most comfortable fit. Usually made of maple or cedar, shoe stretchers are normally used on leather shoes. In addition to getting the shoes widened, certain shoe stretchers can be elongated to a certain length, like the two way shoe stretchers. This also alleviates problems like bunions and hammertoes. They are available as wider stretchers, two way stretchers, vamp stretchers and toe stretchers.Shoe stretchers are good to buy in pairs, as when the shoes are left unworn, they can be inserted to maintain the fit. Some stretchers have holes to insert ortho plugs, which are the bunion protectors that protrude out to stretch the areas that require extra stretching. Leaving them for around a day inside the shoes can get the shoe to the most comfortable fits. They can be bought from the shoe stores, or purchased online. They come with instructions, as well as solutions or liquids that can be used to easily stretch the material. The knob placed at the back of the stretcher is turned to stretch the shoe to the desired fit.
Two Way Shoe Stretchers - Widens and Elongates
Two way shoe stretchers can widen and elongate the base as well as the back of the shoe. The stretcher is inserted into the base of the shoe (toe). The stretcher handle is then wound behind the shoe until resistance. The back of the stretcher would press down the heel. In case of any bunions, the bunion plugs that come with the stretchers can be positioned at the places where pain occurs, and this relieves the pressure in the oppressive areas. After positioning the two way shoe stretchers properly, keep the in the same position overnight. Try the shoe the next day to see if the fit is perfect. Upon understanding what fit is required, the process can be repeated on the other shoe as well. The 2 way shoe stretchers are great for shoes that are too short and narrow to the feet.
Shoe Stretchers for High Heels - Relief from Hammertoes
For those looking for shoe stretchers for high heeled shoes can go for stretchers specially made for high heeled shoes. These stretchers have extended handles that reach deep into the shoes, and expand them to achieve the desired fit. They can also be stretched to increase the width, the length, or the toes. While wearing high heels, it is possible to get hammertoes, and the toe ares can be stretched using shoe stretchers for high heels. Insert the stretcher at the area where stretching is required, and turn the handle at the back. Keep it overnight to achieve the desired fit. they can be used to stretch shoes with upto 4 inches heel. Stretching oils can be used to facilitate the process and to soften the leather. Now, if you are serious about your goal, then it’s a matter of doing a proper assessment of where you are in terms of your current dancing ability, and putting a proper plan in place to help you accomplish your goal.

The good news is that with enough discipline and luck, becoming a good dancer can be as simple as selecting and following the right path to accomplish your goal. On the flip side, if you are not serious, or if you become distracted, then your goal may forever remain outside of your reach. Therefore, you will want to make sure that becoming a good ballroom dancer is something that you really care and are passionate about to put the time and emotional, as well as financial resources to help you accomplish your goal.

Before we identify the specific steps you will have to take to become a better dancer, let’s further examine what becoming a better dancer really means. Then, you will have to ask yourself what becoming a good dancer actually means to you. You may also want to dig a little bit deeper and ask yourself “Why do you want to become a better dancer?”. Having that answer to that question, and putting things into a perspective can actually help to make your goal easier to accomplish.

The two types of dancers:

There are two types of dancers in the world of ballroom and Latin dancing; social and competitive dancers. If your goal is to become good in terms of dancing socially, then I would advise you to learn how to lead a lady in such a way that it feels effortless and fun to her. If you’re a lady wanting to become a better follower, then you will need to learn how to follow in gentleman’s lead in such a way that it feels good to you and your partner.Your learning curve will largely depend on your learning style, and the amount of time you dedicate to learning and practicing your leading, or following skills. Keep in mind that for some people learning how to dance can seem easy and natural, while it may seem daunting and challenging to others. Everybody has a different level of ability and talent, which will largely determine the amount of time that will take for you to become a good social dancer.

Yes, meeting new people through social ballroom dancing can be great. It’s becoming trendy, popular and attractive. It can also be fun, and even if you do not meet somebody right away, you will still have the opportunity to interact with many different people and perhaps boost your confidence, and improve your self awareness in terms of gaining a better understanding of your own body from moving through the space to the music. If you’re a shy person, you will also have a unique opportunity to learn to be more social, and gain more confidence in your interactions with people in dancing circles.

Thus, if meeting new people is your goal, you will want to make a good first impression about yourself, and continually maintain that good image of yourself in your dancing community.

Make sure that you always look good, feel good, and smell good before you set a foot onto a dance floor. Get a good haircut, some nice and well fitting clothes, and a good pair of street.
