i wear slippers in the house but cute flats out - they are very comfortable for the little that I wear them and I don't feel like a dork in big clogs. My husband would hate it if I wore clogs. I had a pair of Birkenstocks once and he thought they were sooo ugly! And I have a pair of Doc Marten boots that I wear when it snows and my kids ask me why I am wearing Daddy's shoes. I've learned to prefer feminine shoes that are also comfortable. I get a lot more compliments on them.

I've just thrown away two pairs of Dansko clogs. They are comfortable, but I had post-summer large-toe toenail problems (nail coming away from nail bed on one side) two years in a row, which the podiatrist thought was caused by routine "trauma". The only thing I could trace it to is the slide-slide-slide effect of walking in a clog (the toe bumping up against the front).

Your mileage may vary, but that was my experience.

PP here (the one with the toenail issue) - my sister broke her ankle while wearing those clogs. She got up quickly from a sitting position, and her ankle twisted a bit. Since the sole of the clog has no "give," her ankle snapped.

The same thing happened to me in the late 70's while wearing clogs.

When dansko clogs fit properly your toes should never hit the front.

I have narrow feet which is so frustrating. Cute trendy sneaks never fit properly. A few years ago (pre kid and house in the burbs) I got a couple of pairs for a trip to Europe. I was desperate not to repeat a previous vacation's mistake where I had poor walking shoes.

Hole crap I have never looked back. I don't care that they're
chef shoes. They are awesome. At the very least they're worth having to kick around in on more casual days.

And when they fit properly, the toe shouldn't be touching the front either. ::shrug:: Either way, given my toenail issues and my sister's broken foot, I won't wear them again.

My ankle twists in them, too. I think I am going to give them up, but they are comfy.

Sorry, I think they are frumpy and very unflattering to the leg, just like Crocs.

Did you know that what you wear on your feet says more about you to other people than anything else?

If you are wearing crocs, clogs and Birkenstocks at a young age, I shudder to think what will be in the closets when you're older. :0 Clunky shoes are simply not attractive!

Prada does a line called Linea Rosa that are super chic and very comfortable. There are so many nice options out there.

Anonymous  I just got a pair of Born Toby shoes which are very similar to the Dansko clogs, but a little less clunky looking. They are sooo comfortable and I don't think they look bad at all. The other reason I like them is because they give me some height and my normally long jeans don't drag on the ground like they do when I wear my sneakers. I see tons of people wearing them in and around my neighborhood in Arlington. I guess I think of them as a good alternative for moms who are chasing kids around all day and want something a little less clunky than athletic sneakers. I also have more "trendy" sneakers, but they are so flat and provide no support to my arches. As for the person who recommended the Prada shoes, they may be nice, but I don't have $500 to spend on sneakers so my Born Toby's will have to do.

The Prada Linea Rosa are not sneakers and they are in the $350 range which is quite reasonable for a good shoe these days - considering that it is not unusual to see shoes nowadays in the 4-figure range.

Once you're in a good shoe, you never go back.

Oprah just did a shoe intervention. Check it out:

There are shoes in the five-figure range, too, but that doesn't make the $350 ones any more reasonable for me. No way I can spend that on shoes (and I'm guessing I'm in good company) without sacrificing some groceries, or missing a mortgage payment.

Not for normal people, dear. Normal people do not believe that people's shoes are more telling than anything else. Sorry.

You know, if you wear Danskos, it may indeed mean you've "given up," whatever the hell that means.

The next question is, what is the problem? And after that, You know that has to happen at some point, correct? Because there are very few 85 year old women tottering around in their 4 inch Laboutins.
